Mr. Leonard, who is 40 and has lived in West Harlem ever since he came to New York in 1994, moved to his current apartment three years ago. The 2,200-square-foot space, for which he pays $3,675 a month in rent, reflects his passion not only for African art but also for the giants of African-American culture.
Beautiful home and article, but that’s some crazy rent. I’d live more compactly rather than dish out that much for a non-investment.
I never really featured Times Square when I lived in NYC ‘00-‘02. There is no discernible reason to go there as a resident. But from this retrospective, it appears that ’80s 42nd Street ain’t much different than current South/West Side Chicago or some of my then Harlem nights… #ImASurviver

The truly downtrodden victims of the recession.
Haven’t reached your daily privilege rage quota yet? Read this New York Times article about wahhh how difficult life in New York City is for 20-something, (mostly?) white college grads. They’re like, one missed paycheck/night of drinking away from living in a homeless shelter.*
A 45 minute commute? Small bedrooms? Roommates? WILL THE HORROR EVER END!?!
*their parents’ basement
Boo-friggin-hoo. Is anyone forcing these kids to live in one of the most expensive cities in the country? Cry me a damn river.
(Seeing this right after reading about homelessness on Change.org makes me super cranky.)

“Marc Jacobs is the Michael Bloomberg of the West Village and also its Sam Walton. Jane Jacobs would have loved him, if she wasn’t overcome by conniptions at his oozing influence over her beloved neighborhood streets. He is a colonialist, an extender of brands, and in very good shape.” - Jon Caramanica
