Good Kid, M.a.a.d. City - Kendrick Lamar
I had given up on West Coast hip hop a long time ago. But Kendrick is a conscious rapper on the low that has found a way to maintain street cred despite his intelligence and ability to likely rap over his compatriots heads. Shit, I was getting it in to ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’ at the bar and then I had a lyrical epiphany that this damn song is about SOBRIETY! #Brilliant Not to mention the album is a clever ass movie. Shout out to his parental unit and their ‘shenanigans!’
She my different stuff. It is what it is. I get her songwriting. Vague. EMOtional. Dark. Introspective. Vulnerable. Needy. “Spill up all of your love for me! Tell ‘em I’m your lover baby!” And there’s an Amel Larrieux lightness that she’s beginning to understand better and use to her advantage. #iApprove
He’s finally getting his just due. ‘Adorn’ is so beautifully written (and sung) that I’m sure Maxwell coughed up a lung. And sex & drugs as a theme could be trite for R&B, but he makes it so fresh. Then there’s that mystery because I was (am) pretty sure he’d like to hang out with me and Frank…

Dream Hampton put me on with the video she directed. Very Brooklyn lesbian orgy teas. And a more authentic Floetry without the attempts at mainstream nor neosoul. The album is progressive, alternative, Black hipster. Nice beats and an incense and dim lights kinda flow. I hope the duo stays a couple and not disintegrate into anger.

I side eye most UK imports. And she didn’t get the Adele type of reception, but her music is just as good with more versatility. I fave her on mid-tempo and slow ballads though. Her songwriting is stellar. And her voice is fun. The falsetto is so piercing, that I worry that she’ll do permanent damage.
I just couldn’t get over the dynamic lead single ‘Hold On.’ The lead singer, Brittany, has the most raw, expressive voice. And her fronting a band makes it all even more appealing. And yet, they make the anti-No Doubt. I bet seeing them live would be metaphysical.
